The People You Meet

Watch an episode of Pawn Stars and you will quickly notice one thing - those guys have a "guy for that". They understand how important it is to be able to quickly contact someone if they need assistance with a sale.

There is a lesson to be learned here, one that many business professionals know already. That lesson is knowing how important it is to get to know other people. Networking is very important for both professionals and nonprofessionals.

Think about this - it is a well known fact that the best form of marketing is word of mouth. That means people talking to other people. The more you trust someone, the more likely you will be to take their word for something. For example, a new restaurant opens up in your town. You are a little weary of going their yourself since you do not know if you will get your money's worth. The first thing you do is ask your friends and coworkers if they have been there yet and if so, what did they think of it.

Also think about this - Say you need some repairs done to your car or home. The first thing you do is figure out who you know that could do this job for you if you cannot do it yourself. If you do not know someone, you wish you did.

The Power of Networking

If you have ever thought to yourself "I wish I knew someone who..." you should start networking. Local networking groups, which can be found through Google searches or contacting your local Chamber of Commerce, are the best way of meeting new people. You never know who you might run into and how they might help you in the future.

The Ten People You Should Get To Know

Imagine what it would be like to never have to search for a repairman or lawyer again. Through networking you can meet a guy or girl that does that. And since you will stay in contact with them, you will have a personal connection with them and not feel uncomfortable talking to them.

As you meet more people, keep in mind that you might also be their contact for what you do. Communication goes both ways.

Also, even if you do not meet, say, a handyman, you might meet someone who does. That is why it is important to grow relationships with the people you meet, not just exchange business cards.

Start networking and try to get to know at least one of each of the following. You will be happy you did.

1. A Lawyer. You never know when you might need a lawyer. Being able to call one up is a huge advantage for those instances. Many lawyers can submit legal forms for you and/or represent you in court.

2. A Car Salesman. If you can find a car salesman that you trust, that is huge. Knowing the person you are buying your car from can save you time and money.

3. A Mechanic. Being able to trust your mechanic to not only fix your car but to not rip you off as well is very important. Take this advise from someone who has tried many and been ripped off by (probably) most of them.

4. A Computer Tech. Everyone reading this blog has access to a computer and that computer can break or start giving you trouble. Who are you going to call when that happens?

5. A Financial Adviser / CPA. These two are obviously not the same, but a financial professional and an accountant know about finances and can probably each help you with basic issues.

6. Police Officer. This one is pretty self explanatory.

7. Public Official. This is someone who works in your local government. It can save you lots of time if you know where you need to go and what paperwork you need to fill out before heading to town hall.

8. Handyman. Having a handyman or a Mr. fix it on speed dial can come in handy more than you might expect.

9. Business Owner. This is especially important for young entrepreneurs. Being able to talk to someone who has been where you are and can walk you through what you have to do is a huge help.

10. Veterinarian. It is estimated that 73% of households in North America have at least one pet. Being comfortable with a veterinarian is therefore important to many of us.

Really helpful informative Hub. Thanks for the great ideas! I have a friend who joined a Networking group and it is helping her with her self published book promotion.
