Story Ideas - Use Them!

NaNoWriMo

I have signed up for the annual NaNoWriMo challenge. NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and it is held every November. Here is the website: http://www.nanowrimo.org/

The goal is to write a novel with at least 50,000 words from November 1 through November 30. For an idea of just how much that is, the average 300 page novel has about 70,000 words. That is a challenging goal by itself, but add to that most people working at least part time and writers block, and it makes for one huge challenge!

As I was developing the plot I want to write about for NaNoWriMo, I came up with many other ideas. I know I will probably never get to these, so I figured I would post them here and maybe help someone else find an idea or give them one to build on.

IDEAS

* You or your character are walking around a city with no idea who you are or what you are doing there. What would you or your character do? How do you or your character get out of this situation? Does your memory come back or do you have to live with it and build a new life?

* Imagine your mother or father as a child and growing up. What did s/he do? What trouble did s/he get into? Was s/he part of the popular clique at school (or the athletic or artsy)?

* What if you thought you were perfect. Pretty, smart, funny, could do anything you wanted, but no one else though of you that way? What would happen if someone finally told you what they thought of you? Your whole life would be turned upside down.

* Remember what you wanted to be when you grew up? How would your life be if that came try instead of what really happened?

* You go on vacation and something horrible happens to you. What happens and how do you get home?

* A normal routine trip to the grocery store turns into the greatest moment of your life. You either a: meet that someone special only to find out he is a serial killer or b: get inspired to take a chance you never would have dreamed of a year ago and...

* You get a chance to build your own city. Some land in the desert or on the planes was for sale really cheap so you bought it. What would your city look like? What would make it better than cities that are around today? How would it be run? How many people would you let in? What else?

A notebook and pen? Do people still use those?

I have a few ideas, but the problem is that I already used them! Okay, enough of that. Here's one for any of you takers, which I mentioned in my hub, "Why I Write: A Reflection"

A supermodel and a internet tycoon crash land on an island off the coast of Canada in the dead of winter (no more fluff about a beautiful tropical paradise). Both struggle to survive and so at one point, the two come to the realization that one has to die so the other can live (dog eat dog, for instance). Who win?

I hope you like it and if not, I hope someone else does.

Pen and paper? I couldn't live without them. That moment when an idea occurs I have to be able to jot it down. I have the memory of a sieve. :D

Good luck with Nano. I'll be there too.
