I never had Miracle Whip until I met my now ex husband a few years ago. He told me he hated Mayonnaise and Miracle Whip was much better in taste and diet wise. He made a good sale. We bought Miracle Whip the next time we went to the store. I was kind of excited to try it. However, when I did finally taste it, I hated it! Now, we keep both Miracle Whip and Mayonnaise in the house.

A few days ago, I was doing some web surfing and came across a website that was debating the differences between the two condiments. There were no comments on the site and I cannot find it again. So, I decided to do a Hub about it! Isn't Hubpages great!

Here is the question: Do you prefer Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise and why?

My husband told me he liked Miracle Whip better not only for the taste, but for the fact that it is healthier also. I cannot find any evidence of that. In fact, I have been finding that they are about the same it is the other way around.

No matter what, I still prefer Mayonnaise. I try to avoid both and eat healthy, but I enjoy my Subway sandwiches. Which brings me to another question. Maybe it's just me, but how come I can never find Mayonnaise to buy at the grocery store that tastes the same as deli Mayonnaise?

Hellman's Mayonnaise! 100% delicious! This is the only brand of mayonnaise I buy. My mom did too, but she also bought Miracle Whip. Nasty in my opinion! Doesn't even come close to the taste of real mayonnaise.

Thanks for sharing!

Good question and good hub! I don't know the answer but would like to know which is healthier. I heard that one has more sugar than the other and that is the difference? But don't know if that is true.

Blogurl, good question! I like neither of them. However, isn't the issue all a question concerning carb content? It was hard to read the labels you posted, but it looked as if Mayonanaise has zero carbs. That's very important for someone on a low carb diet.

the miracle whip stuff says on the ingredients list that it contains high fructose corn syrup and modified food starch. Both terrible for you, particularly the former.

I've always preferred real mayonnaise to Miracle Whip. I rarely eat either of them to really be an earth shattering difference in my life.

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

I don't use either of them too much any more. I always thought Miracle Whip tasted sweet. The HFCS might explain that.

Have you ever tried making your own mayo?  It's not too hard (though a little messy) and the taste is far far superior to anything bought in a jar. Also it has none of those preservatives and mystery ingredients and you can use a good quality oil instead of a cheap questionable one.

Mayonnaise is one of the five foundation sauces in French cuisine. It has been used extensively in French cooking for over two hundred years because it is so simple, adaptable and that it provides a fine basis for a considerable number of other sauces. Miracle Whip is a cheap, sweetened "knock-off", originally created during the Great Depression to address Kraft's sales slump.

I grew up in a household that used Miracle Whip as a sandwich spread. My mother used to tell me that MW and mayo were the same thing, so I naturally classed the two together as a "nauseating condiment".

Later, as an adult, I tried mayonnaise and was stunned by the difference in taste and texture (we're talking Hellman's/Best Foods here). I have been a fan ever since, using it for sandwiched, sauces and soups.

My parents still insist there's no difference. But then they like their veggies overcooked (soft and droopy).

Jada 2 years ago

I too grew up with Miracle Whip in the 1940s and 50s, and thought it was the same thing as mayonnaise. My parents had come through the Depression and price was a big factor. The first time I tried mayonnaise I was surprised and delighted at how rich, eggy and creamy it was. I've never looked back--it's Hellman's all the way (not the reduced fat type).

I never really liked Miracle Whip as it reminded me of the way some people's feet smell bad. I didn't know until recently how much sugar and other crap is in MW. Hellman's mayonnaise just adds richness to food, and can also be used as a base to make other sauces. For those who like Hellman's and Miracle Whip mixed, try mixing Hellman's with unflavoured yogurt to reduce calories and give Hellman's a less creamy, sharper flavour.

I worked in a Unilever factory that produces Hellmann's mayonnaise, in the quality testing department, to be specific. I have not eaten Hellmann's mayonnaise in 6 years. It's amazing how good something can look on the shelf when you know nothing about how it's produced. Your best bet is probably to stay clear of both products, as I don't expect the ingredients in Miracle Whip to be any better in quality. I sincerely regret knowing what goes into the Hellmann's now, because I used to like eating it.

I have tried both Miracle Whip and Mayonnaise. I do prefer MW as I line the sweet and acidic taste that it provides. I will eat Mayo. I do not tend to keep both in the house, but if I have a guest that does not like MW I will make fresh from scratch mayo for them. I have access to very fresh eggs so those plus a little extra virgin olive oil makes a wonderful sauce.

I did grow up on MW and I think that’s actually where my preference originates form. But I do believe “to each their own.”

Tiffany 2 years ago

Personally I prefer mw grew up on the stuff and can't stand eating mayo. The only time I WILL eat mayo is when I go to a deli and get a sandwich. I Agree with you the mayo Tastes completely different from the deli. The one hellmans make tastes like armpits to me.

After reading all these comments and opinions I have come to realize that I do like the taste of mayonnaise better then MW my mom kept both in the house but we would use MW for sandwiches and the mayonnaise for making veggie dip on holidays so it wasnt in the house as much, then i tried it at a friends house when i was younger and found out i liked both and would ask my mom to buy me a small container which she had no problem doing, now i usually just use mayonnaise when i mix up chicken salad, tuna salad, or make a simple sandwich with fresh meat from my towns butcher block.

Mick 2 years ago

I grew up on MW but like either. The deciding factor for me is that MW light tastes like regular MW (I honestly can't tell the difference) while I think Light Mayo tastes nasty. MW Light has only 20 cal & 1 g of fat per TBSP. Reg. mayo is 90 cal and a whopping 10g of fat.

Sage 2 years ago

Miracle Whip has slightly less fat/calories. It's the better of two evils health wise but both are horrible for you. (I'm talking about Kraft MW and Kraft Mayonnaise, other brands may vary.)

Mayonnaise has absolutely no taste to me at all. I can feel it on my tongue but my taste buds don't register anything. Miracle Whip is delicious, I can eat Miracle Whip on bread like jelly and toast.

sabhic 2 years ago

I too grew up with Best Foods in California. I remember my best friends mother making sandwiches and using Miracle Whip I was SO grossed out at the akrid chemical taste that I could not eat it lying and saying I had a tummy ache and going home LOL Later when she made sandwiches I always requested NO mayo and just mustard please............ Also I remember the smell on another persons breath after they ate Miracle Whip, just awful. As an adult I have since tried it to be fair and sure and still do not like it. I am strictly Best Foods, I won't eat any generic or lite varieties. Nothing like two slices of good bread a tomato off the vine from my garden, some Best Foods and fresh cracked pepper! Sorry MW lovers and I concur its definitely what your household grew up with. To be sure had my mother used MW the story might be reversed but I doubt it :) Thanks for posting this.

me 23 months ago

well i grew up with MW in the house too and not Mayo, I'm not a big fan of either, but for deviled eggs or tuna fish, MW is required, for dips and chicken sandwiches it has to be Mayo. I'm trying to figure out something to do for my artichoke tonite for dinner and it looks like I will be making an aioli which is a flavored mayo for the most part.

William 23 months ago

Really? Lol. The question is which is better (for you) and all of the comments are who likes which best. I don't have an answer just wanted to be a smartass.

Nutritional facts for both products available on their respective website at (only directing to the original recipe, and not the lite versions):

I learned from Dr. Atkins to avoid corn syrup and modified food starch, two ingredients you can find in Miracle Whip, but not in good quality Mayonnaise.

Hades 19 months ago

Miracle Whip wins hand down; do to lower cholesterol and fat content and calories.Whats your doctor say about that Parsec.Fat is a silent killer, as well as cholesterol. For Mayo, ones(1 tablespoon) serving is 15 percent of ones recommended daily allowance. Most use more! We wonder why Americans are so fat, put more fat on top of fast food fat.

Miracle Whip all the way. It tastes creamy instead of globby and solid like mayonnaise/Hellmans. Plus, Hellmans tastes too salty. I've tasted both side by side and it's no contest that Miracle Whip is creamy, not too much salt, not too "solid or globby" from the oil, and very beautiful and white (others like Hellmans is too yellow in color which shows they aren't as healthy- they use to many egg yolks which make it yellow and unhealthy). Miracle Whip is in my opinion tastier and healthier.

Jaime 18 months ago

Miracle whip is better for you than regular mayo. It has less fat and less calories but more carbs. However, Light mayo is the best for you out of the others. I never eat regular mayo, since it's the worst for you. So, I alternate between light mayo and miracle whip. I actually took 10 minutes in the mayo isle and compared all the nutritional contents. If you want the healthiest choice go for the light mayo, then Miracle whip, then regular mayo.

Sugary paste is what Miracle Whip is and if it was really all that good, sandwich shops would be using it!! Mayonnaise is good for sandwiches, salads and dips, not that nasty MW crap and I even like sandwich spread too!!

September 16 months ago

Miracle Whip makes me gag. One bite and it's like "alright, who sprinkled Splenda all over my turkey?" I'm a mayo lover, but it's gotta be "the good stuff", even if it means splurging $16 on a single jar of it from Williams & Sonoma. There is such a big difference. Hellman's and other typical mayo is yellow-tinged and has the dense, flat consistancy of pudding and literally looks like a hunk of jiggly blubber. Good brands that go for the homemade-restaurant style will be paper-white and fluffy like real whipped cream. Once you have that, you'll never go back.

I have always preferred miracle whip over mayonnaise and I grew up with both. I have had bad experiences as a child with eating sandwiches containing mayonnaise after the sandwich was left in a lunchbox for a few hours. Warm mayonnaise tastes terrible! A sandwich made with miracle whip tastes much better under those conditions. To me, miracle whip is tangy and slightly sweet which boosts the flavor of the sandwich and it tastes great cold or at room temperature. Mayonnaise tastes okay cold, but not at room temperature, which is the deciding factor for me.

Dan 15 months ago

So how exactly did you compare those two incredibly blurry, illegible labels?

Bobeche' Girl 15 months ago

I will only eat real mayo! I grew up on miricle whip. When I was about 14, a friends mom made me a sandwich with mayo. I couldn't believe how good it was. I never wanted miracle whip again. I can tell if it's in deviled eggs or potatoe salad and I absolutely won't eat it. The taste of the sugar in it makes me gag. It just doesn't belong in there. I think sugar should be in desserts, not in your mayo. My husband doesn't understand how I could like mayo if I grew up on miracle whip, he has to have what he grew up on. It's like this, if you grew up staying at Motel 6's all the time when you were a kid and then stayed at the Hyatt, how could you ever go back to the Motel 6?

corey 11 months ago

i like miracle whip for the fact of the taste and also because I've never had mayonnaise but I'm guessing if i did i wouldn't like the taste anyways because I'venever tasted anything else and also is mircle whip mayonnnaise also or is it different from mayoonnaise

Matt 10 months ago

Freshly made mayonnaise made from a cold pressed oil such as olive or safflower will not only taste better, but will actually be good for you. The other two are made from soybean oil which is not cold press extracted from the bean. Also soybean oil is cheap and does not have the rich flavor that you find in deli mayonnaise. At the end of the day it is that soybean oil that is bad for you.

Do I have a preference? I am not crazy about the taste of oil. When I was growing up both would be in the house. The MW would go on sandwiches and the mayonnaise would go in the macaroni salad. I would lean toward the mayonnaise when necessary otherwise I prefer to do without.

I live in the South, and here, people (including me) swear by Duke's mayonnaise. It's the closest I've had to homemade mayonnaise. I can't stand Miracle Whip--it's too sweet. I'm like most of the other posters. I was raised thinking Miracle Whip and mayonnaise were the same thing. Boy, was I wrong. Scrap it all and make your own. It's only 4-5 ingredients and takes about 10 seconds in a food processor.

MAYO IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

I HATE MIRICAL WHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Miracle Whip ;to me Mayonnaise is bland and tasteless.

BeachBum 4 months ago

I like them both, and on And with different things. I sometimes crave one over the other and viseversa. What I take issue with is bigotry... over sandwich spread?... Really?

BeachBum 4 months ago

I am unable to participate in the vote because I love them both equally. The only thing I DO consider is MAYO has eggs. I would never pre-make a batch of potato salad knowing it is headed for an outdoor party on a warm day. Actually I wouldn't use Mayo for anything that is headed outdoors, on a trip, needs to keep more than a day... It's all about the eggs. If you miss the little whang of Mayo, just add a little lemon juice to your recipe. Honestly I would rather forgo any taste preference in favor of knowing I am not going to kill anyone with my egg salad sandwiches.

Also... Just FYI. If there is an outing, and someone else has prepared some goodies with their choice of the two, I make it a point to ask which they used prior to partaking... AND I never consume anyone else's food that has Mayo in it. How old was it; was it stored properly; how far ahead did they prepare the dish... etc. I only trust my own Mayo.

I dislike Miracle Whip and only want to find Kraft Real Mayonnaise, but have been unable to for months. I live in Cape Town and am SOOOOOO frustrated!! None in any of the stores. Help!

twinkle2414 2 months ago

Ok, my husband did not know that there was a difference between mayo and miracle whip until I discussed how I liked each on different things back when we were dating. I think there is a HUGE difference. I like miracle whip in tuna, ham, chicken salad and things like that, and on bologna sandwiches, etc. But I like mayonnaise on burgers and turkey sandwiches and stuff like that. I guess I am weird. But it drives me crazy when I go to a restaurant and ask for mayo for my burger or whatever, and they bring me miracle whip!!!

They are both one and the same. You need to just say no to any kind of mayo!
